This is a song about a woman following her creative path despite the demands of family life and the cultural expectations of mothers. It is about pushing through the messy moments and finding inner strength and defining her beauty her value and power herself. It was written and recorded while Ann was taking care of her baby boy and struggling to keep up with her trumpet playing and recording. It speaks to the challenge many of us face in pushing through and believing in the value of their creative gifts no matter what family members or society might say. The phrase “watch your mouth” comes out of women breaking each other down and how detrimental that is. The woman who takes the high road, who lifts up herself and others can turn mess into a funky and joyful song! “Mama Don’t Take No Mess” refers to not allowing anyone else to to take away our joy, so we can sing and dance through it all!
